2017 Continued Continued
(it's been a busy year)
9-23-17  The clouds are quickly disappearing this morning. Mother nature is giving us a nice day to install roof decking.
Using sketchup I drew the deck boards in 3D against the dome. Then Dan and I recorded the angles needed to install the roof decking against the dome.
The sketchup angles worked great and Nolan, Ron, and Dan installed the roof deck on the bedroom frame.
Leaving the details for now to work on the next frame.
9-24-17
Dan cuts the miters on the 2 x 6 roof decking.
He hands the boards up to Ron and Nolan to install.
The roof decking is up and nailed off, the fascia boards are up, and the barge rafter is hung. Clouds are coming in. Rain forecasted for tomorrow.
9-25-17
Raining. Drilled relief holes and install lag bolts securing the cupola to the dome roof.
9-29-17
Dan prefabbed cleats to attach to the dome under the roof decking. Then the roof decking gets attached to the cleats and everything is, well, attached.
Each cleat has a different bevel and compound miter as it wraps around the dome.
9-30-17
Mother nature is not being so kind this weekend. There is new snow on the mountain and it is chilly and wet.
Nolan and Ron deck the entryway frame.
Dan G. and Luke finished the details on the deck frame then moved to the cupola and installed fascia boards and drip edge.
Unfortunately we are not going to have time this season to install our triangle windows. So we will board up the openings for the winter.
Cleats are installed in the openings.
Panels are cut and attached.
And there goes our north view.
We will apply Grace Ice & Water Shield over the timber frame extension roofs and whole dome including the boarded windows for the winter.
Bye Bye south view.
10-1-17
Dan G. and Luke installed the five cupola windows.
I'm glad we didn't have to board these up for the winter. They let a lot of light into the dome.
We have windows!
10-2-17
Dan finished installing the roof deck cleats and got the last few things nailed off. Now we are completely ready to apply the Grace. We tried to install some this weekend but it was too wet and cold for it to stick.
Hopefully we get some nice enough weather on the weekend to get the Grace on the roof.
Even though I swept and squeegeed, our bedroom floor looked like a reflection pond after every shower.

10-5-17
The sun is shining. Bruce and I installed the Grace on the the timber frames.
Dan had a custom drip edge flashing made to cover the plywood at the bottom of the riser walls. Between the wall and deck joist is often a problem spot and we wanted extra protection.
10-6-17
Bob and Dan worked on installing the flashing while Bruce and I installed Grace.
When the flashing was complete all around the dome, the four of us worked on the installation of the Grace. We completed the riser walls and almost the first row of triangles.
10-7-17
Rain showers prevented us from installing more Grace. Dan put a final tightening on all the bolts so that we could return the manlift to Star Rentals (a company we found good to do business with). I burned brush piles and construction debris. At the end of the day we sat by the fire and toasted to our 28th wedding anniversary:)
10-8-17
The templates Dan made for cutting the Grace are working well. Bob, Patty, Bruce, Dan, and I all worked on installing Grace today.
Because of the rain on Saturday we had to wait for the dome to dry before we could stick on more Grace. Even though we couldn't start too early we almost completed row two and got a few triangles on row three.
10-9-17
Bruce and I installed more Grace. We worked on the shady side since it was warm enough for it to stick.
Hopefully we can finish the sunny side even on a cold day as long as it is dry. We installed 29 triangles of Grace today with 47 left to go.
Mongo won't play with me, I'm tired of chasing chipmunks, I popped my ball, and Mom is on the roof and not giving me enough attention. Poor poor me.
10-14-17
Snow on the mountain and foothills, down to 4000 feet. Frost on the dome, dripping inside as it melted. Lots of rain in the forcast after this weekend.
We installed 19 more triangles of Grace, completing row three. The hardest row on this dome because of no place for a ladder on the south side and it's still pretty vertical on a harness and rope.
10-15-17
The Grace is finished all the way to the top of the cupola!!!! The last 28 triangles and the cupola now have Grace and will shed water.
Grace is only suppose to be exposed to sunlight for up to 90 days before covering with roofing. But their is the way it's suppose to be and then their is reality when you are racing against Mother Nature. We left it exposed all winter on the shop dome and it preformed great. It is amazing stuff....
Amazing Grace
How sweet it forms
To protect from upcoming storms
We once were wet, but now are dry
Were worried, but now relieved
Twas Grace that hailed, where others failed
To shield and keep our dome so dry
How precious does that Grace appear
When new snow shows the aging year
And like the rains are sure to come
But so our dome shall not succumb
All because we've won the race
Using the product the amazing "Grace"
10-22-17
With the weather man describing the weather pattern as "a 5000 mile rain cloud reaching all the way to Japan..." we decided to stay home for the first weekend since April and work on our dormer design.
Dormers, dormers, dormers.
These things are driving me crazy. The only reference point is an imaginary flat ground and there are so many bevels and miters my head is spinning.
Side walls and front wall.
Rafters, fascia boards, ridge beams, barge rafters, outriggers, and cleats.
Dan is going to prefab these in the shop this winter. He will make two side wall panels, one front wall panel, and two roof panels for each dormer. Then the panels will be assembled at the dome.
There are three loft dormers, a dormer for the guest bedroom, a bathroom dormer, and two large multi angled eyebrow dormers over the two triangle window arrays.
10-28-17
Saturday Dan and Bob built the internal framing for the bedroom side walls.

The studs have to be notched around the timber frame braces.
After laying out the area to be notched Dan makes many kerf cuts with the saw.
Then breaks out the pieces.
And cleans up the mortise with a chisel.
When the wall is stood up the brace fits into the mortises.
On the outside the studs are flush to the exterior.
10-29-17
Sunday Dan and I framed in the gable and end wall of the bedroom.
Notching around braces, the king post through tenon, and the struts in the gable.
We finished the end wall but it was too dark to get a final picture.
11-4-17
A little time out for hunting season.
11-18-17
We've had 16 inches of snow a couple of times, but it's melted to about 5 inches at the moment.
After installing the flashing around the bedroom frame and nailing off all the studs, they begin to hang the plywood sheeting.
Dan and Josh worked on siding the north and south walls.
The sheets next to the dome take the longest to hang because they have to be fitted to the dome.
For now they just covered the windows for the winter.
Dan bought me a drone for my birthday. This was my second time attempting to fly.
Climb! climb! climb!
Don't hit the dome!
Then no matter what I did it seemed to have a mind of it's own and flew off over the tree tops and went down somewhere between these two trees.
I hiked down through the timber and found it in a tree. A little worse for wear but still functioning.
11-19-17
Sunday we hung the remaining sheets of plywood on hand.
12-17-17
With a little break in the weather we we're able to work at the dome. We needed to seal off the openings under the timber frames. We started with the deck frame opening.
We built a frame and attached Tyvek to the outside of the dome and to the frame.
We left the entry way opening for last, hoping to get to it.
The bedroom frame is not completely sided but with the snow here we decide to get the Tyvek on.
The rain returned as it got dark, but we got most of the Tyvek on the bedroom extension.
12-9-17
With most of the latest snow melted we hauled the barn boards from home to be stored in the storage container at the dome.
But the wind was blowing so hard that the wind chill was freezing us to our core and we had to keep taking breaks to warm by the fire.
We planed to unload the trailer then work on winterizing the dome.
Merry Christmas
           and
Happy New Year!
