After hours and days of building wall forms, Dan & Mike load them on the trailer.
Five trailer loads and 108 wall forms go to the ridge.
Jackson & Jeremy packing forms around the perimeter of the shop.
August 23rd 2009
The outer wall forms are bolted together and attached to the footings. The outside walers are up and held by form shoes. The vertical rebar is installed.
    8-23-09
Four rows of horizontal rebar installed (all cut and bent to the correct angles), window bucks are in and the forms are all sprayed with oil/diesel mix as a form release.
The shop form complete with inner forms, walers, shoes, scaffolding, cleats, and bracing. We started the cabin forms before we completed this one. We worked on both, depending on if we had help for the day.

The first of the wall forms going up. There are scribe lines on the footings at each joint that the forms must line up with to fit correctly.
Still Sept. 13th 2009
It started out warm but the weather changed toward the end of the day and became chilly with a few rain drops.
We got major stuff done today. The trailer unloaded with all forms carried into "the hole", the cabin's outer wall forms in place and bolted, the vertical rebar installed, and scaffolding built on the shop. (see pic of shop above).
Our crew for the day: Justin, Brandon, Steven, Jeremy, Robbie, Dan, Brie, Christine, Mike, Me and our faithful buds Bullwinkle and Bomber.

Mom and I went to the ridge mid-week and installed six rows of horizontal rebar. Dan took Thursday off from work and put in the window bucks and started closing up the cabin forms.

Ready for concrete!
Sept. 28th 2009
Concrete day. Six trucks brought us 52 yards of concrete. Bob was the hose man, Phil ran the stinger with Doug carrying the motor end, I was the screed person and Dan the finisher. We finished by about 1:00 and it was raining by 5:30.
Oct. 10th 2009
The rain is coming in a couple of days and staying for awhile. The road up the hill will become too soft for the concrete trucks. We decide day before yesterday to try to get the shop slab done. Doug uses his excavator to fill the wheelbarrows for us.
Robbie and Dan run the wheelbarrows and I rake out the piles. We need to fill to the top of the footings which are 12 inches high. Although the area in the middle is not as low it takes 4 yards of material for each inch of lift. Robbie compacted for the last time as it was getting dark.
Oct. 11th we installed rebar, expansion joints, and grade lines. Oct. 12th we had 23 more yards of concrete delivered. This was the only crew we have hired on our project. We were so glad to get the shop slab done this year. It will be July before the trucks can come up the hill again. Now we can start on the shop dome first thing next spring.
Oct. 18th 2009
It snowed and rained all week. Doug did some excavating mid week. We now have ditches for the drains and to run wire to the shop and cabin from where the generator shed will be. After Dan installed the conduit, we pulled the wire through. Doug installed the drain around the daylight basement and in front of where the shop apron will be.
After the snaptie shoes and walers are removed, the outside forms are stripped off and packed back up top. Then snapties are snapped off, and the snaptie holes are filled. Then the concrete sealer is applied and finally we are ready for Doug to backfill around the cabin.
Oct. 24th 2009
We are still having a few nice days. Doug has backfilled around the cabin and started a rock retaining wall.
    11-1-09
The rock wall is finished and looks great. The ground is getting soupy.
Nov. 11th 2009
Mike, Dan, and Bruce work on stripping off the inside form panels. Then all the forms are disassembled because they won't fit through the door. The lumber is cleaned of nails and stacked up top to be hauled home for the winter.
Christine and I work on removing snapties and plugging the holes.
By the end of the day the inside of the basement is clear of forms. We still have several piles of forms in the driveway from the cabin exterior and shop building. Weather permitting we will get the lumber salvaged from them and stored in the dry.
Basement & shop walls
Nov. 20th 2009
The snow has arrived. We have disassembled many of the form panels. The plywood was the cheapest we could find and is fouled with diesel and concrete so we are disposing of it. Our hill has become too slick to bring our trailer up and down so we are stacking the lumber we've salvaged in the Suburban, then hauling it down the hill and restacking it on the trailer.
The turn around driveway and the grading around the buildings is turning out very well. The ground is very sloppy from the rain and from being worked, plus now it is being covered with snow. The final grade and finishing touches will have to come later.
Nov. 20th 2009
The season is over for Doug and his excavator at our place. He will walk it down to the bottom of our ridge and load it out.
Nov. 21st 2009
The snow is starting to accumulate, but we were still able to make it up in the Suburban. It is quickly turning into a winter wonderland.
We took two more loads of lumber down the hill in the Suburban, this completes our last load on the trailer for this year. We didn't get it all down, but we came close. We gathered our tools and tended our stump fire for the day. We feel we have pushed the building season as far as we could.
Dec. 5th 2009
The snow melted and we were able to go work at the ridge today
.
This cow elk and her two calves were also enjoying the sunshine on our ridgetop.
